As the shadows lengthen so do the colors deepen and the textures shift. The bright berries and stone fruits of summer–strawberries and raspberries and blueberries, cherries and peaches and apricots–ebb and make way for crisp apples and crabapples, fragrant quince, sweet seductive grapes.
The blackberries, latest of the summer berries, had a tough time locally, so there will be a limited edition of that much-loved (in my book, anyways!) jelly. Am going to see about picking one last bucket tomorrow.
But the grapes, the grapes are looking good. Bluish-hued beauties, Concord here
and next to some little wild ones from my yard. Next up as summer turns to autumn, the air cools and the leaves turn brilliant, jewel-hued Concord grape preserve from les collines.
Fingers crossed for some champagne grapes from the Finger Lakes (some kind of finger pun there)–if my sister can get them for me we’ll have champagne jelly as well, xo
